The Purple Gallery

As a completely new venture for me, never having involved myself with making money in sl, I've been building a little parcel centred around a gallery.

I bought two lovely buildings and have made a little city square which resembles an area of London I was always fond of.  There are no paintings yet, and that is part of the reason why I am writing, but if you'd like to pop over and check it out: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Purple/89/200/21

I'm lucky enough to rent a parcel in the historical sim, Purple.  I'm told it is one of the first 50 sims in sl.  Certainly it is rare that I have Linden ocean in front of my parcel; ocean which can be sailed or flown across to the other side.  Purple is also the end of the line of the Great Second Life Railway and Purple Station is right next to my gallery: http://www.virtualrailwayconsortium.org/railway-locations/gslr

The Ferry also sails from Purple Station. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/GSLR

So I need some help, firstly some feedback and advice because I have not run a gallery before.  My idea is to let artists exhibit (there's room for sculptures, etc as well as paintings and the like) and not charge them rent, but set up a system of payment where I receive commission only.  Is this normal, workable?

The next step is to find some artists who would like to exhibit.  I will promote/advertise the gallery and would expect the artists to promote and advertise their work too.  If you are an artist, or you know one, who might like space to exhibit, please IM me inworld or email me.

I am hoping to have a Grand Opening Party as soon as possible, with live music.  I will host live music parties on an occasional basis thereafter, to generate interest and because it is fun.  The way the parcel is laid-out, it will be like attending a street party, which I thought might be fun too.

So - HELP!  Please comment here, IM or email me...  much appreciated :)

  1. Hi Magnus
I know you can set up the Hippos system of vendors to distribute payments or commissions.
    Good Luck!
    Will try to stop over.

  2. Brilliant, Derek, and thanks. I was wondering how I could have it run itself. I think most galleries, like malls, rent the space. I would rather take commission only, and hope to encourage new (and poor!) artists.

  3. (Sigh, I thought I posted this but it seems to have disappeared. Sorry if it double posts.)

I have some art world contacts in SL. I will talk with them and see if they will be willing to offer you some poiters. My current computer situation makes getting into SL tenuous at best, so I am posting here. If I can get inworld I will IM you with names etc after I talk with them.--Seicher Rae
